Can Australian Music Survive in the Age of Spotify?
NIVA and Spotify Partner on Independent Live Music
The National Independent Venue Association has confirmed a year-long partnership with Spotify designed to strengthen independent live music across the United States.
The initiative includes an Independent Booker Spotlight playlist series launching this northern summer, in which NIVA selects a booker each month to co-curate a playlist with Spotify’s editorial team. It is a structural move that gives independent bookers, the people who shape grassroots touring decisions, direct visibility on one of the world’s biggest music platforms.
Whether that translates into meaningful routing and revenue gains for venues remains to be seen. But the commercial logic is sound: Spotify benefits from a genuine partnership with independent live music, while NIVA member venues gain access to the platform’s audience and marketing infrastructure. For Australian operators, the question is whether similar bridges between digital platforms and physical live spaces could be built locally, and whether collective industry association leverage could unlock comparable partnerships here.
