Can Australian Music Survive in the Age of Spotify?
The ALMBC acknowledges the Federal Government’s final response to the Parliamentary Inquiry Into Live Music.
In 2024 the government undertook an inquiry into live music and these recommendations were announced in March 2025.
The government simply ‘noted’ many of the recommendations, often with a response pointing to the imminent initiation of consultation around the new Federal Cultural Policy.
However highlights of the final response also included:
- Arena Ticket Levy – the government noted the hard work that the ALMBC has done advocating for the implementation of an arena ticket levy. We would also like to take the chance to thank ALMBC Chair Howard Adams for his tireless volunteer work in driving this forward nationally
- Ticketing – In November 2025, following agreement by States and Territories, the government announced it will legislate a general prohibition on practices that manipulate consumer decision making and cause harm, and strengthen protections against hidden fees.
- Ticketing – In March 2025, the Government also announced it will consult on extending unfair trading practice protections to small businesses.
The ALMBC will work collaboratively with the government in the review of the current cultural policy and the development of a new policy over the coming months.
