Support Act has moved its national First Nations music industry review into the research phase, and it is asking people across the industry to take part.

Raising Our Voices is a national review of what it is like to work in Australian contemporary music as an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander person. The research phase opened this week and runs through to November.

The work is being led by Support Act with independent First Nations social change agency Cox Inall Ridgeway and a First Nations Steering Committee providing cultural governance, including ALMBC Board Member Letisha Ackland from Balya Productions. Support Act First Nations Program Manager Catherine Satour is leading the research.

The scope is cultural safety, representation and participation right across the industry. That means venue operators, promoters, agents, crew and label staff are part of the picture, not just artists.

There are a few ways to take part. In person yarns are being held around the country, along with an online survey and written, audio or video submissions for people who would rather contribute that way.

The first phase is funded by the NSW Government through Sound NSW. The final report is expected in early 2027.

Whatever comes out of this will shape hiring, booking and cultural safety expectations for businesses across the sector, and the ALMBC will be including these outcomes in our recommendations to venues and festivals.
