Music Venue Trust and audio technology firm Audoo have launched a UK national study into how accurately music licensing models reflect what is played in UK grassroots music venues.
A two-month pilot analysed more than 600 hours of live audio and found only 21% of live performances matched known songs registered with licensing organisations.
The next phase is a three-month national study, which the organisations describe as essential to building a current understanding of venue licensing and royalty distribution.
The pilot suggests a lot of music played in small music venues never reaches the registers used to pay songwriters, which is a question Australian operators, promoters and licensing bodies will be watching closely.
